Manual Mazda 323 87
When Mazda brought out its new 323 line last year to replace the venerated GLC series, it somehow neglected to provide a station wagon. More than a slight oversight, one might say, considering that small wagons are popular multipurpose vehicles. This year, however, it brought out a neat five-door small wagon that may have made things worth waiting for - for Mazda fans. The new wagon follows in the tradition of the 323 line in that it looks and acts like a small European car, a point that Mazda not only admits to, but brags about. With the success of the Japanese auto manufacturers, I've never been sure why they tried so hard to 'Europeanize' their cars.

But, perhaps, this is why they are so successful. The automotive world, like the rest of the world, at times, does have its contradictions.
But lets go right on to the new vehicle. First off, the small Mazda 323 wagon looks like, well, a small station wagon.
There really isn't a lot that can be done with station wagon styling - form does follow function - and Mazda didn't break any new design grounds with its latest offering. Mazda did give the 323 wagon a gently sloping aerodynamic front end with Euro-style halogen headlamps, flared wheel openings and large glass area. However, this could describe most small station wagons on the market today. The interior is also very station wagon-like, which, of course, is what you should expect from a wagon. There's seating for four adults or five children and a decent-sized cargo area is rated at 25 cubic feet.

If just two people are traveling, the 60/40 split rear seat can be folded forward to provide 57 cubic feet of space. Cargo room is very well laid out because of the vehicle's flat floor (made possible because of the front-wheel drive configuration) and access to it is made easy by a large floor-to-ceiling tailgate. All very practical. The 323 is a small wagon and it really looks small. In fact, it probably looks smaller than it actually is.
It has a wheelbase of 94.5 inches, overall length of 169.7 inches, width of 64.8 inches, height of 55.5 inches and curb weight of 2,170 pounds. A driver won't have any trouble reaching over to open the opposite front door. And with a bit of a stretch, it isn't too difficult to reach the opposite rear door. Front seat room, though, is quite good.

All but the very tall and the very large should be able to slip in without any difficulties. Back seat leg room is adequate for adults if the front seats aren't extended fully back. The interior is a step or two above average for an economy car but, then, the wagon only comes in the 'Deluxe' version.
Instruments and controls are for the most part straight forward. Some of the switches are done up a little differently (on the electric windows, for example, the switch must be picked up to raise the window) but nothing tricky or arty. One item, obvious by its absence, it a t achometer. This certainly would not have been out of place on the five-speed manual car, but none is offered, even as an option.
The test car drove and handled more like a sedan than station wagon - it has the same four-wheel independent suspension as the passenger cars in the 323 series. The suspension features MacPherson struts up front and Mazda's own Twin Trapezodial Link (TTL) system in the rear. The TTL does its part for handling and directional stability through control of rear wheel toe angles under various driving situations. (The physical forces at work during acceleration, braking and cornering, as well as road shocks, will cause the rear wheels to toe out, and, subsequently, work against a vehicle's stability.) Rounding out the chassis are rack-and-pinion steering, front disc and rear drum brakes and wide (relatively) 5J-13 wheels and 175/70SR13 tires. The 323 wagon is no sports car but it handles quite well, or, let's say much better thano e would expect.
And because of its small size, maneuverability and parking are both easy. Powering the wagon is a 1.6-liter/97-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine that produces 82 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 92 foot pounds torque at 2,500 rpm. The engine features multiport type L-Jetronic fuel injection and 8-bit engine control microprocessor, which, according to Mazda, constantly monitors and adjusts the air-fuel mixture to deliver the optimum engine performance under all driving and atmospheric conditions.
This may be true but I must say the test car's engine ran smoothly and was responsive at all times. Performance is quite good.
By playing the five-speed manual right, the 323 wagon can accelerate from 0-60 mph in about 11 seconds. However, it proved to be a little touchy on snow, ice and other slippery conditions. This appears to be just a simple combination of a peppy engine in a lightweight vehicle. Just nudge that gas pedal a trifle and those front wheels do spin; even when you wish they wouldn't. So some restraint is advised under adverse driving conditions. After all is said and done, the 323 is basically an economy car. And this is where it really shows one of its strongest points - fuel economy.
The test car averaged 35 miles per gallon for highway driving and 25 mpg in the city. This is enough to brag about. Although the 323 wagon is small, it is by no means cheap. Base price for the Deluxe Wagon is $8,899. Standard equipment includes rear window wiper, rear window defogger, tinted glass, stone guards, front mud flaps, intermittent windshield wipers, luxury type steering wheel, center floor console, digital clock, child-proof rear door locks, and a bunch of convenience and appearance items.
